Homework due Wednesday, 4/30, and Thursday, 5/1

Nothing due Wednesday, but you should be nearly finished with your research -- please definitely be finished by Thursday. Finished = organized as well. Due Thursday: ALL RESEARCH WITH OUTLINE.

By Thursday, you should also have revised your Ch. 1 draft, with special things to keep in mind since they will be posted:

1. Turn in two copies (one will be posted and one will go to your Newcomers buddy).
2. Write a letter to your Newcomers buddy to accompany the draft.
3. Use a special heading for this deadline: Title by "Your Name" (don't use a SLS heading).
4. Make sure you provide enough Queens context to tie in your two stories to that borough and to each other. Use information from Lehrer and Sloan. It should be at least a paragraph.
5. Make sure you quote both people in Ch. 1.
6. Use signal phrases before quoting someone.
7. For a quote from Lehrer and Sloan from someone else, use parentheses at the end, like this:
(Quoted in Lehrer and Sloan 33).
8. For a series of facts or quotes from the same source, like Lehrer and Sloan in Ch. 1, you can use parentheses just once at the end of the paragraph, listing all the page numbers. Multiple quotes will still count for multiple citations.
9. For your buddy, you don't need to use parentheses, since he or she is already in your bibliography (no need for "Quoted in" and there are no page numbers).
10. For this draft only, include a mini-bibliography of the two sources you used after the text.
11. Make sure your draft has transitions from one paragraph and story to another, and that it has a conclusion.

Homework due Wednesday, 4/16

Prepare a typed skeleton outline for your paper (Ch. 1 need not be that detailed). Provide all the categories you're going to look for as you do research. Use pp. 3, 8, and 9 in your packet for reference.

Then, put that outline into "post it" format by creating categories for your note cards. You should be ready to take notes tomorrow.

Here are some sites Ms. Thompson found that can be very helpful (esp. for primary sources). You are allowed to use them:

Homework to Work on Thursday, 4/10,and Friday, 4/11

Nothing is due tomorrow...but...

Work on Ch. 1, which is due Monday. You'll need note cards for Ch. 1 (buddy interview note cards, note cards about information in Lehrer and Sloan -- CTB), to sketch out an outline of what you are going to say, and a rough draft written.

In class tomorrow, you'll get your topics and browse books to augment your working bibliography. It will be work time. The typed working bibliography is due Tuesday.

I will be checking signatures and dates in your planner....

Homework due Thursday, 4/10

Due at 8:30: Your "top ten."

Read over packet and have a parent sign it. Read over and familiarize yourself with the packet's contents. Plug the deadlines (pp. 6-7) into your planner between now and May 14 -- really -- you now have most of your homework. Make a "top ten" list of topics for your research project in Ch. 3 (see p. 22 in packet), starring those that are from your background. You may not get your top choices, so be open minded.

In class on Thursday, and for Thursday night homework, you should work on Ch. 1, making note cards and writing a rough draft for the two-page "magazine story" about Queens and two of its inhabitants. Be sure to give credit to your sources (either your buddy or the authors of CTB).

Apr 8, 2008

Homework due Wednesday, 4/9

Make 8 bibliography cards of base texts/websites (see p. 4 in immigration packet) and your buddy interview. Use the bibliography format on p. 15.

By Thursday: read over packet and have a parent sign it. Make a "top ten" of topics for your research project in Ch. 3 (see p. 22 in packet), starring those that are from your background. You may not get your top choices, so be open minded.
