HW due Fri., 2/26

To see or share the cool film we saw in class today (Wednesday), go to this link, and click Film #5, "Vision Test."

http://www.mediathatmattersfest.org/3/

You will write an essay on the era of Jim Crow.

Due tomorrow: preliminary steps. Choose a thesis, write an outline, and choose two quotes. This is due tomorrow with no exceptions.

The essay is due Tuesday, March 3. There will be no other homework during this time period.

Question:
How was a system of social and economic inequality for African Americans reinforced by violence, images in the media, and the legal system during the era of Jim Crow? How did African-Americans resist, and how did they survive?

Be sure to use at least TWO primary source quotes. More is better -- it makes your ideas much more powerful if you quote people who actually lived the experiences.

Use the resources given to you in class!

Some things you'll want to include...
___the kinds of work Black people had to do
___lynching, KKK
___Plessy v. Ferguson, Jim Crow segregation laws
___the fact that most sheriffs, judges, etc. didn't enforce the Constitution
___images/stereotypes of African-Americans
___the "racial etiquette"
___NAACP, DuBois, Wells, Washington (and their White allies)
___primary sources, such as Richard Wright, and the first hand accounts of lynching

PLEASE NOTE:

It will be customary to write regular essays in history classes as a way to express your learning. Sometimes you will have tests and quizzes. Sometimes you will write. This time it is an essay. Good luck!

ALSO DUE WEDNESDAY: COMMUNITY SERVICE REPORT.

HERE ARE THE GUIDELINES....

COMMUNITY SERVICE REPORTS
You will turn in a word-processed document to Ms. Allen with a St. Luke’s heading that answers each of these questions for each different type of activity. For example, if you went to a couple of Amnesty meetings, you can put them in one paragraph, and write a different paragraph for a different activity. Make sure the work is done up to SLS standards for 7th/8th grade writing. Copies of your goals and reports will be kept in a folder in a file box in the Gr. 8 classroom. Good luck!
1. WHAT and WHERE were the events? Describe them.
2. WHEN did they take place – and for how long? Keep a running total of your hours on each monthly report.
3. WHY were these activities meaningful examples of community service? What did you learn from them? How did they help others?
