Community Service News:
* AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL MEETING FOR GRADE 8 ONLY Next Thursday, FEB. 10
* ST. CLEMENT'S FEB. 11 AND 25 (open to both grades).

WE WILL SAVE THE DISCUSSIONS ABOUT THE IMMIGRATION LAW/IMMIGRATION POLICY TO THURSDAY. YOU STILL SHOULD HAVE READ ABOUT THE ARIZONA LAW.

DUE TUESDAY, 2/1:
1. Write a letter to your buddy or buddies.

2. Find your CROSSING THE BOULEVARD book.

3. Choose one story in the book that really interests you. Read it carefully. This will be the story you'll be writing about for Chapter One of your research paper.

4. Make a least five post-it notes in the book, where you highlight a good quote or a set of facts that could be included in  your story.
You will make five more tomorrow. Include some post it notes about  QUEENS as well. You have to write about this borough as a haven for new immigrants as well.
You will also have to write find five post its in your interview booklet about your buddy tomorrow. This is to do ahead.

DUE THURSDAY, 2/3:

Read the article about Egypt, watch the news/internet video tonight (not tomorrow) about the massive planned protests, and write the reflections as assigned. Do that tonight (Wednesday). We will discuss it in our next social studies class.

Then, continue planning for the writing of your Chapter One.

1. Make FIVE MORE POST ITS in Crossing the Boulevard. Make sure some of them include information from the first part of the book with factual information about the borough of Queens.

2. Make TEN POST ITS in your interview booklets from the Newcomers day. Find interesting facts or quotes you could use in your chapter.

3. Write the opening paragraph of your chapter. How do you think you would start it? With a catchy story about a buddy? About one of the characters from CTB? Some descriptive passages about the people who pass through Queens?

Remember, the chapter has three ingredients:

QUEENS + BUDDY STORIES + CTB STORY

In class on Thursday, we will discuss Egypt. Then we will have the laptops available for continued writing of Chapter One. It is due on Monday, when we will resume the Constitution project.

HW due Thu., 1/27

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZviskmKLuz0
Due Thursday:

No class Wednesday due to Life Awareness.

Read your buddy's or buddies' story/ies.

Then, write an introduction to the story. It should be about four sentences long. It can be in first or third person. You can talk about your relationship, something you like about your buddy, an anecdote about him/her, something you remember from your visit to Newcomers, preview something from his/her story, etc.

Print up a copy of the paragraph(s) to turn in.  Sign your name at the bottom. Save a digital copy in the folder "Immigration and Newcomers" under your buddy's name.

Read the article about the immigration detention law for the possible Amnesty meeting on Thursday. Bring the money for the meeting if it's still on (it might be postponed). You are expected to be knowledgeable about the law and the human rights issue related to immigrant detention, even if you aren't coming to the meeting, and even if you don't agree with Amnesty's position.

In class on Thursday, please bring your buddy's stories as well. We will begin rolling out the immigration research paper.

You will have a study period in class on Friday.

HW due Wed., 1/19, and Thu., 1/20

We'll have LA presentations for a double period tomorrow (Wed.). I'll check the homework due Tuesday in class on Thursday, so make sure you have everything done that was due (see blog post for Tue., 1/18). You can also check the Landmark Test Site calendar for due dates, past and present. Remember, you can also download the project sheet:

https://sites.google.com/site/landmarktestsite/

Due tomorrow: signed essay.
Due next Monday: rough draft of project.
Due next Tuesday: "About Me" page.

Jan 13, 2011

HW due Tue., 1/18

In light of the snow day, and the visit by Ms. Spyropoulos and Mr. Baldwin to class on Friday to discuss the Bill of Rights, we will not be working on the Constitution project until next Tuesday in class. However, you should still be working on it on your own.

Here is the new login page. Ms. Zelechow deleted the iGoogle pages (sorry), so you'll just be able to go to Google Docs. She did it at 2:30 this afternoon, so no one told you:
https://docs.google.com/a/stlukeschool.org

HERE IS WHAT IS DUE ON TUESDAY, JANUARY 18:

You will then have all next week to work on the project (except Wednesday, when we will have a double period for Life Awareness).

1. The framework of your website:

2. The page summarizing landmark cases of juvenile rights.

3. The bibliography link.

4. The primary sources link (the actual primary sources you think you might use (not the bibliography, although you should say who said the quotes or what part of the Constitution they come from).

On Tuesday, I'll be asking you to email me a link to your website.

Jan 11, 2011

HW due Thu., 1/13

Make the framework for your project website with all of the basic required links (see the project sheet). If you can't find it, go to the test website (scroll down to an earlier post for the link to iGoogle and to the test website).

For Thursday, also prepare the page for the summary of juvenile rights pages. A suggestion would be to make it like a list of events rather than a regular web page. Then each case can be a post. Try it out. You might like this -- it might be easier.

You can also keep researching, especially if you get a snow day, as you will lose a work day at school.

Maybe I'll see you, maybe not!

Jan 10, 2011

HW due Tue., 1/11

That's 1/11/11...

Write a letter to your buddy/ies.

Do some kind of research for your Supreme Court case project. On a sheet of paper, write down what you did to turn in .

Tomorrow, we will begin building websites. You will have the laptops in front of you, and I will take you through it, step-by-step.

Jan 6, 2011

HW due Mon., 1/10/11

If you were absent, when you come back to school, make a folder on your network folder for all of your Constitution project research. Download the project assignment and save it in the folder (you can get it from the Landmark Test Site (see link from the post below), and save all of your research from now on, including the primary sources you have found. YOU ARE ALL EXPECTED TO HAVE THIS FOLDER ON THE NETWORK BY NOW. YOUR WORK SHOULD BE SAVED IN A DIGITAL FORMAT BY NOW.

If you haven't gone to the Landmark Cases website by now, you should -- it's great.

If you haven't gotten your parent signature on the project yet, you should. We are continuing to research the case. I NEED TO SEE THESE SIGNATURES FROM EVERY STUDENT!

DUE MONDAY:

1. Working outline or "skeleton" outline -- make one up based on the list of questions in the project sheet. It doesn't contain the research --  it will provide you with the structure for organizing your research.

If you have a script, you will have two outlines -- one for the drama, and one for the "things you need to find out" -- you'll insert those things into the script in a different order as you develop your ideas.

2. Also explore Google Partner websites. Go to this website. Click on the "log in" link in the top right hand corner. Your login is as follows:
Your first initial and your last name; password is "slsstudent" (two s's).
YOU SHOULD SPEND AT LEAST 30 MINUTES ON THE WEBSITE!

Additional information about the website:
Explore Google Docs, Calendar, and Sites (especially -- you can go to a video about Google Sites. Do so and learn everything you can).

In order to access it, go to "Add Stuff." Add the widget for Google Apps, then  Google Docs and Google Calendar, and then go back to your home page and click "more docs," and then you should see the page with all of your applications). If you are having trouble, try emailing me or one of your classmates if you were absent.).

If you are still having trouble with the with the Google Page -- even when playing around with it (seriously, you guys are so Internet savvy that once you are logged on, you should be able to eventually figure out how to get to Google Sites -- I know you can do it) -- then Ms. Zelechow or I will sit down with you on Monday to figure it out.

ON MONDAY, WE ARE HAVING A FULL CLASS REHEARSAL FOR MLK; AT 10:00 YOU WILL HAVE A FULL CLASS ENGLISH. ON TUESDAY, YOU WILL REHEARSE IN ENGLISH CLASS.

Jan 3, 2011

HW due Thu., 1/6/11 ( MLK assignment due Wed., 1/5; see bottom of post.)

If you were absent, please go to this web page and download the assignment  at "copy of the assignment" and read it over to yourself. Also, familiarize yourself with the web page format so you know what path we are going down.
Ms. Allen's Practice Web Page

Everyone:

1. Please get the project signed by a parent. You might want to explain it to him or her.

2. Tonight, not tomorrow or the next day, go to OYEZ or LANDMARK and find the MAJORITY OPINION for your case. Print it and begin reading it. Read it all if you can, even if it's hard to plow through. Highlight or type up at least two primary sources to begin building your primary sources for the project.

 3. Think about which of the three options you want to choose for the project and decide by Thursday.

Tomorrow, 1/5, please prepare the modified, "user friendly" copies of your MLK biography/biographies. PLEASE BRING TWO COPIES.
